Another weekend, another early start. Ed arrived at mine at 6.30 and we quickly loaded up the long boards and big sails, and set off for Joss Bay on a voyage of discovery! I was really suprised to see how beautiful the place looked (and how nice Margate was in the morning light before the hordes arrive!).

We arrived at low tide and had a wicked sail messing about for a few hours in the sun with a F2-3 wind as the tide pushed in - racing each other and generally coasting around exploring the place. Even managed to get the boards so close together I was able to sit down on the nose of Ed's board as we sailed (until I crashed!). Then Ed pointed out that we had drifted quite a way up the coast and that we needed to head back down wind to get home. I'd been mistakenly looking at the nearest beach thinking it was the one we started from. well anyway, a bit of a downwinder sounded easy enough - but I hadn't factored in that there was a 6 knot tide running against us, and a very lumpy sea. We rocked and rolled and balanced for ages trying to head down wind (which was exhausting work), but we started to realise that we were just standing still and were not making headway against the tide. so eventually we faced facts that we weren't going to make it back to our launch beach, and headed in with the tide to a beach about 2 miles along the shoreline called Botany bay. There then followed a hike in wetsuits over the cliff tops, across a golf course and along some narrow lanes to get back to the van. We quickly changed then navigated our way to Botany Bay to pick up our gear (and reward ourselves with a flithy cheeseburger and chips!).

Alls well that ends well, but it made me think about how blasé we were about the conditions. There are some strange currents in that bay and some nasty tidal races. Worth bearing in mind for future. On the positive side though, had a great fun sail, and discovered a place which looks very promising for a wave in the right conditions. Little ankle snappers were shaping up beautifully on the inside....
